The Latest Twist In Portland Cement Zambia Case Shuns Everyone


The lawmaking bodies of any nation have the power to make or break a nation’s political and social-economic position. Quick, transparent and ethical regulations and law practices are necessary for swift resolutions across courts, further strengthening the progress and development of the nation. It is also necessary for performance enhancement of the government and public bodies within a nation, which are often role model as well as positive or negative inspiration for rest of the nation. Unfortunately, majority of the nations across the globe suffer from numerous limitations and challenges with respect to their legal system, regulations and effectiveness of court proceedings. The same situation is being faced by Zambia legal system.
The case of Portland Cement Zambia is almost a decade old. It was registered by Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, a noted businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist and social worker. Since the establishment of the case, numerous proceedings have been conducted, trials have taken place but without any result. The dragging of the case is nothing but ineffective legal system of the nation. Despite having almost all evidences, the final verdict took such a long time to get announced. Even then there is no relief for Dr. Mahtani. The judge handling this case announced that the case hearing was to be closed and both sides were asked to submit their evidences and testimonials in written and oral format. Based on evaluation of these evidences, final judgment was to be announced.
However, the final verdict was an unexpected one and final verdict was given against Dr. Rajan Mahtani’s claims. Not with standing this skewed judgement, Dr. Rajan Mahtani has now appealed to the higher court ofZambia against the judgment at the Lusaka High Court.
